Abstract
In order to determine the relationship between informal spaces in the library and student learning, a study was conducted wherein students who regularly use the library as a learning space were asked to comment on the nature of their learning, the effect of the spaces on their learning and the value of the types of spaces available to them. Not surprisingly, the students' rationales were as varied as their learning needs, but most revealing, the value that they placed on the spaces was more complex than even they were aware of. This study uncovered an acknowledgement of the importance of informal learning spaces in libraries that bears further investigation.
