Abstract

This thesis introduces a recently developed Multistage Converter (MSC) and applies it as a STATCOM to Power Sub Grid systems. Through discussions about harmonics reduction, voltage regulation, mathematical modeling and system simulation on the MATLAB/SIMULINK plaform, it illustrates how the MSC is applied to the Power Sub Grid. Based on the simulation of the single phase MSC as well as the three-phase MSC, it is shown that the introduced topology has the output waveform closer to sinusoidal. Moreover, it has simpler structure. Comparing the topology of the Multilevel Converter (MLC) and the Multipulse Converter (MPC) that is popular for high power applications currently, the MSC has the advantages of smaller total harmonic distortion and lower cost, and is easier for voltage control.
