This discussion of Community Development (CD) is offered to provide some insight into the worldview of practitioners as theorists and educators. The CD community is explored through an examination of conferences, using participant observation, surveys and interviews. The conference community is interpreted as a microcosm of the larger society and used as a context to identify issues in CD theory, planning and practice. It discusses how CD practitioners conceptualize their social, institutional and personal environments, and their encounters with those who are poor, elderly, and/or disabled. A literature review of CD is provided, that describes planning and adult education approaches. A descriptive analysis and a rich description of the research findings follow. Finally, there is the discussion of research results, and recommendations. Suggestions for future research are included. KEY WORDS: Community development, conference, planning, practitioneren
