Destination China: Authoring in the Media of Our Time

Abstract

Destination China began as an inquiry into how literacy, and its meaning, is changing in today's technology-enabled society. Students in a grades four-five split class developed a telementoring relationship with Canadian author David Bouchard to investigate Chinese folktales and legends, and to being their own writing journeys. Students also connected with student teachers and learners in China to dialogue about Chinese culture and history. They then used various technology to create film trailers, oil pastel drawings and tri-fold brochures to represent their understandings of this culture.
