Abstract

The Master’s Degree project, “The Big House at Strathcona: A Design Proposal for the Social Centre,” presents at the design development stage, a proposal for a social centre for Strathcona Park Lodge Outdoor Education Society. The social centre is a multi-use community building which will include: a dining area, members’ lounge, conference area, natural food kitchen, herb greenhouse, general office and reception area, washrooms, storage and outside deckspace. The intent of the proposal is to create a building design which satisfies both the programme requirements of the social centre and the design objectives that develop during the design phase of the project. The proposal also examines the relationship between the programming and design stages of the design process and presents an alternative approach to integrating programming information into the design process.
