The suitability of the synchronous chopper-converter combination is investigated for high power multi-quadrant AC/DC converter applications. Various aspects including harmonic reduction, filter optimization and control requirements for four quadrant operation are analysed in detail. A new chopper configuration is proposed as is the concept of a microprogrammable sequential controller, necessary for realising the required complexity of control. Extensive experimental results are included to verify expected system performance levels.en
