Ozette prehistory - prelude

Abstract

Controlled archaeological and stratigraphic information from an excavation at Ozette Indian Village site on the Olympic Coast of lfashington, provided evidence establishing a local stratigraphic sequence of ten superimposed units of which three and possibly four represent sedimentation involving house-floors. The time period encompassed by the sequence, although not determined, covered an interval dating back from historic time. Material culture recovered throughout the stratigraphic sequence was, with few exceptions comparable with ethnographic forms and had not undergone significant morphological change. It clearly reflected the maritime economy pursued by the historic Ozette people whose pattern of life placed great emphasis upon marine halibut fishing and the pelagic hunting of sea mammals.
