La importancia crucial del discurso náutico y astrológico en las Soledades de Don Luis de Góngora y Argote

Abstract

The following project analyzes the crucial navigational and astrological discourses that appear throughout the Solitudes. Historical and scientific information pertinent to the subject was utilized to set forth a literary analysis of the poem. In the first chapter, the history of Spanish navigation is summarized from the 15th to the 17th centuries, during which time Spain enjoyed global dominance. The second chapter discusses the astrological and astronomical sciences that were of extreme importance during Spain’s expansion. The literary analysis takes place in the last two chapters, and includes the application of the information discussed in the previous chapters to examine the navigational and astrological discourses in the text. In conclusion, it is established that the author chose navigation and astrology, two crucial practices of society, to both criticize the Spanish government of the era, and enhance the powerful imagery of his poem.
