Abstract

With continuous increase in waste generation rate and scarcity of landfill space, industries are adopting sustainable waste management strategies to achieve reduction in waste quantity. An attractive feature of thermal treatment of wastes is the potential of significant energy recovery and beneficial energy utilization from the waste. Nova Chemicals has aimed to meet their Environmental Plan, which targets to reduce 50% waste from plant processes by 2020. Quench sludge treatment and disposal is an expensive process in ethylene manufacturing. The objective of this research is to conduct a feasibility study of an on-site incinerator for Nova Chemicals. This study will review the potential quench sludge waste reduction opportunities with thermal incinerator technologies and energy recovery option that offer both economic benefits and environmental regulatory compliance.
