The experience of relationship with one's parents when a sibling has a substance abuse disorder

Abstract

This qualitative study aimed to investigate how family dynamics are affected when a member has a substance abuse problem. Specifically, transcendental phenomenology was utilized to explore the central research question: "From the nonaddicted adult child's perspective, what characterizes the relationship between a nonaddicted parent and a non-addicted adult child as a result of having (had) a sibling in active alcohol and/or drug addiction?" Twelve participants were interviewed using an open-ended format. Common themes were identified in participant experiences of having a sibling with a substance use disorder. The results of this exploratory study are represented in 6 categories and 32 subthemes depicting sibling experiences. Recommendations for non-addicted siblings, parents, and professionals are suggested.
