The British consulate at Fernando Po: 1854 - 1879

Abstract

The thesis examines the neglected question of the role played by the British consuls who served at Fernando Po in the period from 1854-1879: prior to the partition of Africa. It focuses particularly on their role in the overseas commerce of the Bights of Benin and Biafra and also on their involvement in the British commerce on the Niger River in the 1870's. The structure of this trade, the policies of the Foreign Office and the nature of the support given the consuls by the British Navy are all considered as the circumstances that worked to shape the role that a British consul could play. This study reveals that these consuls were never given the authority nor the means sufficient to allow them a decisive role in the trade and politics of the area.
