Abstract

This individual research project investigates the social and environmental indicators currently used in the corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports published by some of the Canadian oil and gas companies. The reports are analysed to compare the indicators used by the companies in the case study and examined for any reporting gaps in these CSR reports. Literature review is undertaken to identify some social and environmental indicators used by the mining and minerals industry which share similar sustainable developmental issues as the oil and gas industry. Further, the feasibility of adapting some of the suggested indicators into key areas within the oil and gas industry is examined to account for the reporting gaps in the companies’ reports. This research project also highlights the benefits, both at the micro and macro levels of the oil and gas companies if they were to adapt some of the new indicators into their CSR reports.
