Abstract

This research paper examines the potential for adopting a dedicated energy crop and implementing a thermochemical energy system respectively for the County of Santiago in Mexico. It recommends adoption of a torrefaction and pelletisation pre-treatment process for further treatment for the production of an energy carrier, namely, biochar. The feasibility of both energy crop adoption and the torrefaction process is examined from technical, economic, environmental and social perspectives. This study concluded that adopting a dedicated energy crop and implementing a torrefaction process is technically feasible, has valuable environmental benefits, and brings positive social and economic contributions both at local and national levels.
