Are the US and Pakistan friends or foes? A methodological framework of constructivism will be employed to answer this question. First, constructivism will be outlined, and its applicability to the case of the US-Pakistan alliance will be demonstrated. The specific constructivist tools to be used - narrativity and role identity formation - and their applicability to the relationship between Pakistan and the US will be described. The national narrative formation process of both states will then be addressed, and will include such elements as religion, domestic politics, and foreign policy. Interactions between the two states and the process by which role identities are formed will then be described. This will include themes such as victirnhood and exceptionalism. Finally, this paper will address the thesis question and conclude that the US and Pakistan are fundamentally foes, not friends.
