A festival market, a type of shopping mall, is a place for people where buying, selling, and entertainment are the main activities. Throughout NorthAmerica, many successful festival markets have been developed which are precendents to this proposal for Calgary. The project illustrated is a conceptual design meant to demonstrate a potential solution and provide a starting point upon which further study and analysis could be done. The design integrates six components: the market, specialty shops, restaurants, a food fair theatre, a hotel, and office space. The site at Louise Crossing encourages an interesting mix of these components and is an important determinant to the design and organization of the building. The building design resolves internal and external orientation encouraging an active street life and a dynamic interior space. The essential concept is a new building on an elevated platform built directly over a group of old buildings. The integration of the various components takes the market a step further than other North American examples resulting in a dynamic festival market.
