Determining the habitat features associated with the distribution of the black howler monkey (alouatta pigra) within Belize, Central America

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to determine the geographic distribution of Alouatta pigra within Belize, Central America, and to determine if anthropogenic disturbance, natural disturbance (hurricanes), and patch characteristics affect the distribution of A. pigra. I conducted field surveys recording presence/absence of A. pigra. The current distribution of A. pigra in Belize is larger than previously reported. Increased number of settlements was associated with presence of A. pigra. Relative abundance of A. pigra was associated with increased amount edge within a patch. A. pigra was more often found in association with lowland broad-leaf moist forest, and larger patches. Hurricanes have no negative long-term impact on the distribution of A. pigra and may improve habitat quality of patches that howlers occupy. This study shows that A. pigra is found throughout Belize and their distribution appears to be influenced by the number of settlements within a patch, patch type and size.
