Abstract

The Container by Clare Bayley was produced by the Division of Drama, School of Creative and Performing Arts, at the University of Calgary in the University Theatre from October 20 to 31, 2015. This Artist’s Statement details the research and creative process involved in the production. The document begins with an introduction to the refugees’ situation around the globe that sparks an interest in The Container. The next three chapters are dedicated to essential elements of research: hyperrealism as theatrical style, theme and the relationship between characters in The Container and the real-life refugee world; details on the design process and rehearsal leading to production; a reflection of the production and lessons acquired by the director.
